How often have we heard Robert Lenkiewicz described as an “eccentric”, who held some weird ideas about life and human nature? Maybe science is beginning to come to his rescue. A Sunday supplement reports that in a recently published book "Love Sick", clinical psychologist Dr. Frank Tallis, drawing on years of scientific research into the chemistry of love, identifies the amphetamine-like compound phenyl ethylamine (PEA) as being the cause of "lovesickness". "This substance is one of the cocktails of chemicals released when you meet someone you are attracted to. As Tallis puts it: The existence of PEA explains not only why we crave love but also why a romance interrupted in its early stages can be so distressing. The sudden drop in PEA and general arousal when a lover is rejected leads to depression and agitation - like an addict's crash into cold turkey."Now where have we heard that before? Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day!
